Barx
Barx (officially in Valencian) is a municipality in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is located in the southeast of the province of Valencia, in the comarca of La Safor. Barx features significant prehistoric remains, notably the Cueva de las Malladetes, one of Spain’s principal archaeological sites. It belonged to the Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna until it became a municipality in 1836.
In 1873 its parish church, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, was inaugurated. It served as the resting place for the monks of the Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna. During the 1980s, Marifé Arroyo, known as La Mestra, was a pioneering teacher in introducing Valencian in the school of Barx. In 2007, she received the Jaume I d’Acció Ciutadana Award from the Carulla Foundation for her pedagogical commitment to including the Valencian language in public schooling.
